Here’s a Step by Step Tutorial on How to Do Keyword Research
Step 1 -> For this tutorial we’ve selected “Keyword Research” as the main theme keyword and are looking at targeting the keyword “how to do keyword research”
To check the amount of traffic, we will use the Google Adwords Keywords as our free keyword research tool.
As you can see from the above screenshot, the keyword “how to do keyword research” has monthly searches of 390 and has low competition – so we decided to test for it.
Step 2 -> Put your keywords in quotes and press enter, you should now see a figure – this number is showing how many people are your competitors.
Step 3 -> Put &start=990 at the end of URL to see how many pages google is showing with your keyword. Google shows 51 pages that have something to do “how to do keyword research”.
Less pages = Less competition
Step 4 -> In this step, we will use a google search operator intitle & inurl to see how many of the competition have done on page SEO and have the targeted keyword in title & URL.
Here it shows that you have 23,300 pages for the keyword “how to do keyword research” in their title. Anything less than 30,000 should be relatively easy to break.
Here it shows that you have 14,200 pages for the keyword “how to do keyword research” in their URL. Anything less than 30,000 should be relatively easy to break
Step 5 -> We know that we have competition, but the strength of the competition is what is to be looked at. Ideally if you rank in the first page of Google, you will receive traffic.
Here you can use a tool like Traffic Travis to perform SEO Analysis on the top 10 websites ranking in google for the keyword “how to do keyword research”
PR = Page Rank
Age = Age of the Domain in Years
Backlinks = No. of backlinks for this page
BLS = No. of backlinks for the whole site
Difficulty Rating = Given by Traffic Travis
Considering the above analysis, we decided to target this keyword and try to rank for it in the long run as done in this article.
