In my previous post we read on the importance of having an effective permalink structure for long-term SEObenefits. Most newbie bloggers while starting out set up their permalink structure as /%category%/%postname%/.

However this is not suggested by WordPress as for performance reasons, it is not a good idea to start your permalink structure with the category, tag, author, or postname fields. A simple reason not to set up your permalink with the category base is that it becomes a difficult task to re-arrange your posts in future in case of a requirement.

Incase you’ve setup your permalink structure as /%category%/%postname%/and would like to change without going through the hassle of using a migration plugin. A good solution is to use the WP No Category Base plugin.

What is WP No Category Base plugin?

WP No Category Base plugin looks really simple but it is efficient and does a really important job – it removes the word “category” from your URLs so that the keyword rich category tags get closer to the beginning of the URL. This plugin uses 301 redirects for all your old permalinks to the new ones. Also, it is compatible with other Sitemap plugins and works with multi-level categories.

Installing the WP No Category Base plugin changes the URL so that it removes the extra level of “category” and it becomes:

This plugin requires no setup or modifying core WordPress files and will not break any links. The only thing you need to do make this plugin work is activate it.
